2007 VW Touareg 2.5 Tdi SE

Remember those Barclaycard adverts featuring Rowan Atkinson from a few years back? One of them featured his ‘Johnny English’ character droning on about the nomadic people of the Sahara desert called the ‘Touareg’ while carrying a roll of carpet he had unwittingly set fire to. “What a great name for a 4×4!” exclaimed the person charged with coming up with something original for the VW marketing suits to get their teeth into for their forthcoming 4×4. Much better than cousin Porsche’s ‘Cayenne’ which is a town in French Guiana. Or maybe it’s that particularly hot chili pepper. Either way it doesn’t ring bells the way Touareg does for the VW sand-crab.  It does beg the question though – is the Touareg the chariot of choice for the Touareg? No chance. It’s still the trusty 4×4 camel that needs no petrol or diesel or a visit to the local dealership for an oil change. The Bratislava-born VW Touareg belongs firmly in the arena of desirable go-anywhere suv’s that so many people still aspire too and there’s now’t wrong with that. They look fantastic value these days too – a nicely specified example could have cost upwards of £40k when purchased new, just like the one we have recently placed on the market for the current owner. 2006 Range Rover TD6 Vogue

We rambled on the other day about the popularity of white as a colour choice for cars and in certain cases, as with the Lambo, it works a treat. ‘Black’ and ‘Range Rovers’ however, is a double act that has the eternal appeal of strawberries and cream or cheese and biscuits (mmm, nice). Was there a colour better suited for the King of SUV’s? There will always be the pernennial choice from LR of Greens (Epsom, Ardennes or otherwise) to go with the tweed set and the wine-flavoured Reds for those who choose to be a little different. A white RR just doesn’t seem to look right. It shocks and startles while adding a touch of utilitarian to the square-jawed shape. From the Classic to the P38A to the L322, black attire has always suited the RR. Cool, understated, classy are the words that come to mind together with ‘good choice’ and ‘you can’t go wrong’. Big 4×4’s are looking spectacular value during these crunchy unavailable-credit times and the RR diesels offer wallet-friendly fuel consumption. We have just added a 2006 TD6 Vogue to our website which the current owner has asked us to sell on his behalf. It is black (as if you couldn’t guess) and has been driven a lowly 26,000 miles. 2005 Land Rover Freelander TD4 ES

Remember the Maestro? Not a car that conjours up many positive memories and to be frank we’ve even forgotten what it looked like. Unlikely that you’ll find find an owners club for them either. However, it is notable that such a forgettable milestone in the timeline of the British motor industry can take credit for having a hand in two of the most successful 4×4’s ever made – The Discovery and the Freelander. That’s right – at a time when Rover were cash-strapped (as usual) the only way to develop a new model was to search the parts bin, pull out the blender and hope that the resulting mish-mash could pass-off as a ‘new model’. At least in the case of the Disco and the Freelander it was a resounding success based on a Maestro-flavoured sauce. Just like those inventive chaps who made a glider out of matchsticks to escape Colditz, the boys behind that particular recipe should have got medals from the Queen. By 2002 the Freelander had become the biggest-selling 4×4 in Europe and paved the way for the myriad of compact SUV’s that followed from every manufacturer worth their salt. It is also interesting how the car hasn’t suffered looks-wise over the years and even an early 1996 model still looks quite fresh on the streets today. 2006 Porsche Cayenne 3.2 Tiptronic S

There was a time when the name ‘Porsche’ meant one thing - the 911. Not any more. Times have certainly changed and the power of brand marketing has forced many traditional car manufacturers to explore genres and market segments that previously might have been considered out-of-bounds. Porsche is a powerful brand. If they made toilet paper it would be a top-seller in spite of its high price. To find Porsche, however, making its name in the crowded 4×4 market has taken a little time for us to feel comfortable with. It’s a bit like Land Rover suddenly making a car to take on Ferrari. Nobody can deny the popularity of the Cayenne though and the usual Porsche traits of high quality, reliability and dependability shine through in every model. Drive a Cayenne and you know you are sitting in a Porsche. They feel solid and ready to take on the world. So congratulations to the team at Stuttgart and in a world where numbers mean everything the sales figures for the Cayenne prove it was no costly mistake. Good, low-mileage examples are becoming available at excellent value for money these days. We have just placed one on our books for the owner with a very nice spec and only 16k miles on the clock. 2007 Range Rover Sport HST 4.2 V8 Supercharged

If you like your off-roaders to be fast, mean and moody then the RR Sport fitted with Jaguar’s 390 BHP AJ V8 Supercharged 4.2 fits the bill very nicely. With its swooping roof-line and low, purposeful stance the Sport version of Land Rover’s multi-purpose land-crab grabs attention wherever it goes. Did you know that the RR Sport actually shares its platform with the Series 3 Discovery rather than the Range Rover itself? There must be some technical reason for choosing the layout of the Disco but from the outside you would never guess they were related so closely. OK enough of the techno-babble and on to the tasty Java Black RR Sport we have just placed on our books. This example has one hell of a specification and it is highly unlikely that you will find one option that has been missed from the LR shopping list. 2004 BMW X5 3.0d Sport

When BMW decided to enter the 4×4 market its intentions were not to emulate but to stimulate. With direct access to Land Rover technology (having just purchased the Rover Group) BMW set out to create the SAV – Sports Activity Vehicle. In other words a vehicle that certainly looked like a 4×4 but had a lot more of the driving characteristics associated with sports saloons, i.e. the BMW 5-series. Chris Bangle opened his crayon box and sketched out his interpretation of an SAV and voila the X5 was born in 1999. The original design still looks fresh and purposeful nearly ten years later and the X5 has rightly established itself as one of the most desired 4×4’s in the market today. A Rover to Range

We love Range Rovers. We love their ‘don’t mess with me’ looks. We love the way they drive. We love the way they ride. We love the fact that they have been around nearly four decades. If ever there was a motoring icon cake in the making the RR has all of the ingredients. Arguably it set the benchmark for all SUV’s that followed it. Just like the icons represented by the Mini, the Beetle and the 911, the Rangie has got timeless style and desirability by the bucketload. In fact, in our own humble opinion of course, there is no other vehicle on this planet that offers so much all-round capability. It still comes top of the class for off-road use - the competition struggles where the RR is king. It has the prestige of a Bentley. In Supercharged form it behaves like a sports car. It can carry five in comfort with their suitcases on a long-haul trip to the Alps. It just goes on and on and on.
